SAMB Mapping Deliverables Sent to Counties
(back to top)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (September 23, 2004)
- The West Virginia Statewide Mapping and Addressing Board is
pleased to announce that the mapping phase of the project was
completed on schedule by 30 June 2004 by the mapping contractor
BAE Systems ADR. Mapping products include aerial photography,
orthoimagery, and planimetrics (i.e., roads, streams, structures,
etc.) at 1:4800 scale (1" - 400'). The SAMB project manager,
Michael Baker Jr., Inc., performed quality control checks on the
data. The quality of the mapping was determined to be excellent
overall, and meets or exceeds project specifications.
A set of data for each county, on DVD and
ready for viewing in a GIS, was sent to each county PSAP at the
end of August. The initial mapping products are considered "works
in progress." The primary use of the mapping data is for
E9-1-1 and public safety purposes, which entails certain safeguards
and restrictions. The data will include a disclaimer from the
SAMB limiting use of the data (e.g. sharing it with third parties).
The SAMB is trying to avoid interim or uncertified
deliveries, as well as inappropriate or unauthorized use of the
data, including resale of the data, outside of its county customers.

CHARLESTON, W.Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April
14, 2003--The State of West Virginia has selected BAE SYSTEMS to
develop and implement a statewide digital mapping system that will
assist public safety officials and emergency response personnel.
The system will include aerial photography
for the development of digital maps and a computerized geographic
information system (GIS) that will be integrated with Enhanced
911 services, state and local government agencies, telephone companies,
the U.S. Postal Service and public utility systems.
Gov. Bob Wise said, "This high quality
digital mapping system will ensure that our first responders,
emergency management, and planning personnel have the most accurate
information available to do their job. This system will save lives
in our state -- I'm proud that West Virginia is leading the nation
in this effort."
The project is the one of the first in the
country that integrates geospatial mapping and E911 at the statewide
level and could serve as a blueprint for similar efforts nationwide.
Mark Ronald, president and chief executive
officer, BAE SYSTEMS North America said, "This project will
demonstrate BAE SYSTEMS capabilities in Homeland Security and
E911 emergency response initiatives. We're pleased to be working
with the state of West Virginia to support this critical requirement."

Meetings Presentation (PDF)
The West Virginia Statewide Addressing and Mapping Board (WVSAMB)
will hold a series of 7 regional public meetings throughout the
state to discuss developments in their project. Please note the
date and times for your area and plan to attend! Members of the
Board and its consultant, Michael Baker Jr., Inc. of Cross Lanes,
WV will give a brief presentation about the project, answer questions,
provide feedback, and pass out informative materials. All meeting
times are 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
The WVSAMB was created to provide street or city-style addresses
for every citizen of West Virginia. This first-of-its-kind project
will ensure that everyone, including the large rural areas of
the state, receive the full benefit of 9-1-1 service. The Statewide
project is an unprecedented opportunity that serves as a national
model for public safety. To accomplish our tasks, the WVSAMB is
using the latest technologies, such as digital mapping, global
positioning, wireless telecommunications and geographic information
systems. The WVSAMB seeks the support of all county and municipal
officials in this effort to map and address the entire state.
