WVSAMB Vision Statement (back to top) To provide the highest level of emergency
response to insure the safety, security and peace of mind to all
citizens of West Virginia.

Use sound and recognized methods and standards
to provide uniform city-type addresses for the large rural area
of the state.
Ensure that rural areas of the state are
accorded access to the same level of prompt and accurate emergency
service as urban areas.
Respect the progress and accomplishments
of jurisdictions that have completed suitable addressing.
Employ the latest technology such as digital
mapping, global positioning, wireless telecommunications and geographic
information systems.
Manage funding sources efficiently and cost
effectively to accomplish a statewide system at minimal cost,
if any, to the taxpayer or state.
Promote rules for long-term maintenance and
governance of the system.

History

In 1999 several 911 directors attended a
meeting in Washington set up by Congressman Rahall with the WV
congressional delegation to begin the development of the project.
A committee was appointed to look at how
to develop a statewide mapping/addressing project.
Verizon agreed to include funding for a statewide
mapping/addressing project in its new Incentive Regulation Plan
(IRP) with the WV Public Service Commission.
WV E-911 council introduced legislation with
the assistance of Verizon to create the Statewide Addressing and
Mapping Board (WVSAMB)
• Passage of Senate Bill 460 in 2001
creating
the WVSAMB.
• WVSAMB meets regularly in Charleston.
• WVSAMB encourages participation from all partners
and stakeholders
In 2003 the WVSAMB succussfully completed the aerial photography and mapping portion of the project." In 2004 the WVSAMB hired an addressing contractor to assign new city-style addresses to each addressable structure in The State.

The WVSAMB will release its plan for the completion of the addressing portion of the project on 12 July 2006.
